Shabby Tulle Heart-Shaped Wreath

What is more feminine, more loving, more beautiful than a pink heart-shaped wreath? This idea I saw online and I had to make it. I have never made a "rag" wreath before and it was just a photo, no instructions. How hard can it be, I thought? It wasn't hard but it was work and took me two days as I raced the clock to get it done on Valentine's. Of course this is beautiful year round and I will be leaving it up.

There was plenty of pink tulle in my box which I have had several years. I had at least a yard and a half. I also had white. I knew I would never use that much for any of my usual craft projects and this seemed the perfect thing for it. I dove in head first.

it seemed the best frame for this would be a coat hanger. I have seen wire-shaped hearts frames but they have three rows of metal or wire and would not have been suitable for this. I have not seen any other kind and anyway, I wanted to get started immediately. I have previously made heart-shaped frames from coat-hangers for making apple wreaths but it has been decades and as I recalled it was not the easiest thing but I did get a coat-hanger shaped into a heart.

If you try this, use the lightest wired hanger you have because you're going to have to bend and cut it. I'll let you wing as I did and you will see in the photo how it works. I curled one end into a closure after getting it shaped so my material wouldn't slide off while working.

I then cut squares of the pink tulle until I ran out and I strung it in the center of the square onto the wire. The pink filled about three-fourths of my heart. Then I cut longer narrower strips of the white tulle to tie in between the pink squares (or you could just tie it all, the pink and the white, I chose to do squares).

That's it for making the heart. It fluffed out nicely using the tulle and the tied pieces made it fluff even more so. Now to decorate and the possibilities are really endless.

I used a large silk pink rose at the top center and three smaller ones at the bottom and glued them on with my glue gun.

Next I found a banner print I liked that was Valentine-ish from the Graphics Fairy. I printed and cut it out. It says "the gift of my heart." Then I mod-podged it, added white-ish pink iridescent glitter and another top coat of Mod Podge. I ran a textured pink ribbon around the heart and tied it to the side (I did not glue it on). Then I glued the banner to the ribbon (this way if I want to change it out, I can without damaging the heart). I added a small pink ribbon to the banner.

Then I found a dove Valentine also at the Graphics Fairy and print and cut it out, repeating the Mod Podge and glitter process above. I used just a tiny dab of hot glue in a couple spots to adhere it lightly to the tulle above the roses (this I could also later remove if desired). The photo I saw online had actual little doves on the wreath probably Christmas leftovers or from a craft store. I didn't have any doves on hand so I went with the cutouts which worked nicely for me. I added a tiny pink ribbon to them.

It turned out beautifully and I love, love, love my pink tulle heart-shaped wreath. It is hanging on the edge of a window shelf. It was fun to make and I hope to do more, experimenting with other materials and decorations and styles. I think I'm hooked on rag wreaths. If you decide to try one, I know it will be one of the most beautiful additions of shabby chic that you could make.

and let her own works praise her in the gates.
