Heart-Shaped Tray from Empty Valentine Box

After Valentine's Day and all the candy has been consumed, it is nice to keep the box. This year my candy box was small. I can't eat sugar so my husband got a tiny candy heart box just for the ritual. I wanted to keep the box but the sides were not solid, it folded out to open but then I saw the little tray that had held the candy. I wondered if I could do anything with it. It was just plastic.

First I painted it with pale pink chalk paint. I wasn't sure if this would work but it did, as a matter of fact it worked beautifully. I had some tiny hearts with roses already cut leftover from another project so I put one in the center of the tray, then Mod-Podged the whole thing. I had added the tiny decoupage because initially I had thought I would use it for a trinket tray.

Next I added a tiny pearl string around the inner lip of the tray. Afterwards, i used a larger pearl edging to go on the outer top and bottom. It was after this that I saw some of the miniature silk roses that I have for crafting and decided I wanted to fill it with them. I cut tiny (about .5 x .5 in) squares of  floral foam and inserted a miniature rose in each. I put a dab of hot glue on the bottom so they would stay in place and not fall out.

It turned out just lovely and if later I decided to remove the roses and use it as a trinket tray, I can.

So easy to make and from something that would have otherwise been tossed in the trash. It's now a lifelong keepsake.

and let her own works praise her in the gates.
